What this theme sets out on climate justice and active citizenship, before any session.

This theme’s background reading was rewritten by Swechha in September 2026. The manual’s version taught a Britain-facing course — global poverty percentages, a UK youth survey, COP26 in Glasgow, and a Scottish children’s commissioner’s diagram that is not reproduced here — and those passages have been replaced with Indian ground. The only figures used are the National Crime Records Bureau’s, from Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India 2024; they are recorded deaths, a count of what was filed rather than a measure of what a hazard did. The intersectionality sections and the rights framing are the manual’s own, rewritten for plainness.

1. BACKGROUND, CONTEXT & KNOWLEDGE:

The climate emergency is usually taught as a story about nature — melting ice, shrinking forests, animals with nowhere left to go. All of that is true. This chapter is about the other half of it: what a changing climate does to people, and why it does not do the same thing to everybody.

Heat is the clearest example, and the nearest one. Two people can live in the same city, on the same day, in exactly the same temperature, and have completely different days. One works under a fan in a room with a concrete roof, and an inverter for when the power goes. The other lays bricks, pulls a cart, cooks on a pavement, or stands at a gate in the sun. Same weather. Different danger.

India counts some of this, once a year. The National Crime Records Bureau publishes a table of deaths recorded against forces of nature. In 2024 that table held 7,903 deaths, 22.6% more than the year before. The biggest single entry is lightning — 2,825 people — and lightning is on no school syllabus. Recorded heat and sun-stroke deaths went from 804 in 2023 to 1,832 in 2024, more than double in one year. Read those figures for what they are: deaths that a reporting authority attributed to a cause and filed. A count of what was recorded, not a measure of what the weather did.

None of this was chosen by the people it lands on, and none of it is fixed by them alone. The decisions that settle who gets hurt are made somewhere else: how electricity is made, where a colony is allowed to be built, whether the drains are cleared before June, whether someone working outdoors gets water, shade and a break. People do push those decisions. They organise, they petition, they turn up. That is why this chapter treats climate as a question of rights and not only of behaviour.

There are many ways to act and they are not in competition. Some things a person changes at home. Some things only a group can change — a class, a school, a colony, a ward. Both count, and for young people the doing itself does work: it builds judgement, leadership and nerve, and it is one of the few reliable ways to take the edge off eco-anxiety. This chapter is built to move a class from knowing to doing.

Young people are rarely short of concern. What they are short of is a way in. The barriers are practical ones — not knowing which action would actually work, no time in the timetable for it, and the feeling that one person’s effort is too small to matter against something this size. All three are fair. All three have answers, and most of those answers are collective, which is why nearly every activity here is done in a group.

What is climate justice?

Climate justice starts from a plain observation: the people who did least to cause this are hit first and hardest, and they have the least to recover with. The ability to cope is not spread evenly, and it is not spread randomly either. It depends on where you live — which lane floods first, which one the tanker reaches. It depends on what the house is made of: concrete, tin, tarpaulin. It depends on whether your work stops when the weather turns, and whether anybody pays you for the days it stops. It depends on whether you can shut a window and switch something on, or whether the only cooling you have is shade. None of that is weather. All of it was settled long before the weather arrived. That is the injustice — and it is why the question is not only ‘use less’ but ‘who decides, and who gets protected’.

Talking about intersectionality, or interconnectedness — the way disadvantages stack.

How does the resource frame intersectionality?

Intersectionality is a long word for something a class already knows. Disadvantages do not arrive one at a time; they stack. A girl in a poor household in a village the river takes every year is not facing three separate problems. She is facing one situation that the three together made. ‘We are all in this together’ is a comfortable line and it is not accurate. We are all in it. We are not in it equally. If a plainer word helps a class, use interconnectedness — the point is that the parts are joined.

One worked example of this way of thinking comes from Britain: David Lammy MP’s TED talk arguing that climate justice cannot happen without racial justice (https://www.ted.com/talks/david_lammy_climate_justice_can_t_happen_without_racial_justice). He takes two issues that look unconnected and shows the history holding them together. In an Indian classroom the same method runs on caste, on class, on gender, and on which neighbourhoods got a drain and which never did.

How to introduce intersectionality to young people

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is a good place to begin, because it treats what a child is owed as a right rather than a favour. Article 2 says no child may be discriminated against. Article 12 says every child has the right to be heard. Between them, those two carry most of what this chapter needs.

Draw a circle on the board and put a child in the middle of it. Around the circle, write the things that change how that child gets treated: girl or boy, disabled or not, caste, religion, the language spoken at home, how much money there is, city or village, whether the family has lived here for generations or arrived last season. Most children in the room sit inside more than one of those at the same time.

Then ask the question that does the work. If a school, a hospital or a relief camp is designed for ‘a child’, which of these children does it actually fit? Let learners add their own categories to the circle; they will name ones an adult misses. The conclusion they reach themselves is the one that sticks — a single solution shaped for everybody protects nobody in particular.

This chapter treats the climate emergency as a human question and a rights question, and it moves a class from understanding it to doing something about it. That order is deliberate. Young people who are handed the size of the problem and nothing to do with it go quiet. Agency here is not a reward at the end of the learning. It is part of the teaching.
