How it runs
The teaching sequence as the manual gives it.

Take the class out of the gate and along the road for fifteen to twenty minutes, in groups of two or three. The job is to spot energy changing from one form into another. Anything that moves, heats, lights, cools or makes a noise is doing it. Tell them to listen as well as look — a generator, a horn and a pressure cooker are all evidence. Back in the classroom, each group writes up what it found in a table with three columns. -

Take the lists from every group and build one master list on the board, striking out the repeats. Then ask two questions. Which conversion turned up most often? And which one did nobody expect — the one somebody argued about?

If it goes well
Now push each answer one step further back. Where did that source get its energy from? The petrol came out of crude oil, and the crude oil out of things that lived and died long before there were people. The grass took it from the sun this month. The electricity came from a power station, and the class should find out what that particular station burns or what river it sits on. Keep going backwards until the chain reaches the sun — then find the two or three that do not.
