REMAKERY

BACKGROUND & RATIONALE

India produces roughly 65 million tones of waste yearly. Much of the waste produced is not treated and recycled. Through Remakery, we aim to advocate for the act of recycling, reusing, reducing and upscaling products. Our focus is on turning a waste item into a new product that is far better in design and utility when compared to its original state. We want to influence the consumer mindset by propagating environment-friendly consumption.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

At Remakery, we work with waste collectors and scrap dealers across India to collect the waste and upcycle it. We use tyre tubes, juice cartons, milk packets, beer cans, wine bottles and almost everything that has been thrown away. The aim is to give the waste a new life in the form of accessories, furniture, stationary and items of home décor. Nothing is wasted. Rethink, Recycle, Recreate!

At Remakery, we also curate regular weekend workshops on several themes. These range from DIY activities, ‘how to grow your own food’, ‘sustainable living’ etc. The space also hosts weekly ‘One Night Stand’ events every Wednesday, which brings in some of the best artists and activists from across the country. These events help facilitate and engage in dialogue and conversation with our audience and the people from the city.

The aim of the project is to encourage the habit of upcycling waste rather than purchasing products whose production adversely impacts the environment.
