PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

As strong advocates of literacy and financial independence, in 2013 we started ‘Udaan’, a women’s group with the mothers of Jagdamba community. From 2013 to 2015, supported by the British Council, we led the ‘ Young Women Social Entrepreneurship Development Programme (YWSEDP)’, where 200 women from the camp and nearby communities underwent trainings and workshops on skill building, entrepreneurship and enterprise. In March 2015, 200 young girls from Jijabai ITI (Industrial Training Institute, Delhi) underwent a short term course on entrepreneurship in collaboration with Etasha Society.

YWSEDP led to the starting of two women-led social enterprises - the first one was ‘MOM- candle making enterprise’ spearheaded by the women in the Camp, to create awareness through upcycling and employment.

The other enterprise started in 2014, was ‘Lunchbox 17’ - with the women chefs of Jagdamba Camp to provide fresh, healthy and economical lunchboxes. Over one year, LB 17 served over 25,000 meals across Delhi. Our experience with LB 17, led to the development of the ‘Million Kitchen’ (MK), a web and mobile app based aggregating platform, based on the principle of ‘hyperlocal homemade food on the cloud’. Over 150 women came forward to register on our platform and displayed courage and desire to earn their own, have their own identity. Through their unique culinary skills, these women learnt to run a business enterprise and strove to take control of their destinies, serving as role models for their communities. LB 17 has been covered by prominent media houses such as Hindustan Times, Deccan Herald and The Hindu.

In 2021, in collaboration with Carm - Daksh and Girls Count, supported by Ford Foundation, we made ‘Sakhi’, a film on the women of Bilaspur who have chosen the non-traditional livelihood of driving e-rickshaws, smashing notions of gender and patriarchy.

SOME OF OUR

TESTIMONIALS

"I learned lots of things here, including how to turn waste material into something creative. I learned the qualities we should develop as an entrepreneur. This will surely help me a lot going ahead in my future."

Supriya

"I learned so many new things here like how to make earrings out of waste material. Through this women's entrepreneurship program I learned how we as women can earn on our own and make a future for ourselves. I never thought I could do this, but now I am more confident!"

Anamika

20 years Old

"Here in the training I learnt that we are not dependent on anyone. We have to learn to stand up on our own two feet. And the things we think are useless can make the most wonderful things. And that any decision in a group can be made easily once we include everyone's opinion in that process.
