BACKGROUND & RATIONALE

Green the Map was first a recycled textiles project set up by Swechha in 2008; it is now registered as a separate trading entity, as a way of raising awareness on environmental issues and providing secure employment with reasonable wages for disadvantaged people. Through reusing waste in innovative ways to create high quality, useful products, GtG empowers consumers to make choices about their shopping habits. Customers are encouraged to be active citizens who spread an environmental and social message through their consumer choices. Fair trade principles are central to the initiative, which was inspired by the idea of creating an alternative textiles industry to the typical ‘sweatshops’ found in Delhi, where conditions are tough and hours are long. A proportion of GtG profits is used to further develop Swechha’s active citizenship programmes.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Green The Map is Swechha’s retail and B2B e-commerce store, primarily dealing with clothes, daily need accessories, stationery and eco-friendly lifestyle products, along with conference, event merchandise and corporate gifting, which supplies to over 15 stores and buyers in different parts of the world. It is one of India’s leading fair trade, sustainable, upcycling and vegan brands, which is generating livelihood for thousands of migrant workers and women across the country, while saving the environment by upcycling urban waste and surplus fabric.To upcycle and repurpose waste in sustainable ways, we work with waste collectors and scrap dealers across India to collect the waste and upcycle it. We use tyre tubes, juice cartons, milk packets, beer cans, wine bottles and almost everything that has been thrown away, to give it a new life in the form of accessories, furniture, stationary and items of home décor.
