GREEN ACTION IN SCHOOLS

GREEN ACTION IN SCHOOLS

SUSTAINABLE LIFETYLES AND EDUCATION

BACKGROUND & RATIONALE

We work with several schools as well as community groups each year, in developing practical on ground solutions to some of the pressing environmental concerns and projects. These β€˜infrastructure’ projects are aimed at engaging the communities and developing their ownership through action projects on ground.

HERB, VEGETABLE, AND SHADE GARDENS

BUTTERFLY GARDENS

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Swechha works with several schools, young people, corporates, and partner organisations each year in the setting up of green infrastructures across several campuses. These particular interventions are a crucial part of the ACTION component in our various school programs.

We work with schools to create butterfly gardens where students get to learn and be involved in numerous aspects. Topics covered include identification of different butterflies found in Delhi, species selection, designing, and maintenance. We also work on building herb and vegetable gardens. Under this intervention, we create a herb garden with a mix of culinary and medicinal herbs, planted on your campus. While engaging students in planting the garden, they are also guided on the functions the herbs serve and the need, and the techniques for maintenance of the herbs. This sort of experiential technique of education imparts to the child a connection with the environment.

Additionally, Swechha undertakes public parks and converts them into local airsheds. One of our most prominent Airshed Development projects has been in Vasant Kunj, where we converted a public park with 5% green cover into a lush green park with 90% green cover, over a decade of work. This included plantation as well as maintenance of the park.

Creating vermicompost pits is another of our eco-action projects, while engaging students in the whole process. In the last 10 years, Swechha has created over 100 green infrastructures across 100+ schools in Delhi/NCR. Each of these infrastructures is currently thriving, most of them already self-sustainable, with a tremendous survival rate of 90 percent. Under the program of Airshed park development, over 10 years, Swechha has planted over 10,000 herbs, shrubs , and trees in a community park in B2 Vasant Kunj.

SOME OF OUR

TESTIMONIALS

"I never thought I would spend a day in school working with earthworms! Creating compost was fun, educational, and soothing. I hope to work on such projects in the future."

Kanishk

Vasant Valley School

"We spent the whole day creating a beautiful butterfly garden using everyday waste items like old shoes, tires, tubs, filling it with nutritious soil and planting flowers and plants whose nectar would attract various kinds of butterflies! I got to know the importance of butterflies in our ecosystem and how they are integral to everything in nature!"

Sapna

The Indian School

"After the urban gardening workshop today, I have realised that one need not have huge fields or open spaces, farms to grow. One can grow vegetables from a drum and from pots right in one's balcony!"
