SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE & INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT
BEE KEEPERS COLLECTIVE & TRAINING
BACKGROUND & RATIONALE
Apiculture is about rearing honey bees to produce honey and wax. These are man-made (mostly woman-made as women honey-growers outnumber men, in India) hives or colonies of hives of honeybees, a highly organised social insect. We already have a functional Apiary at the farm which has produced 500 kilos of honey. Our purpose is to showcase and educate communities on the ecological and economic advantage of bee-keeping. Apart from producing honey, Apiculture helps in pollination and will assist largely in improving the agriculture of the villagers through pollination. Bees play a very important role in relation to agricultural production as they are great pollinators. Apart from crop plants which are highly dependent on bees, the presence of honey bees also improves the quality and quantity of crops in general.
CROSS POLINATION
LOCAL HONEY PRODUCTION
IMPROVING AGRICULTURE
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Mustard and Bajra belt of Rajasthan relies heavily on cross-pollination. Its semi-arid soil requires natural compost and ecological actors such as bees to ensure great produce. Our bee-keeping collective aims to empower, educate, and elucidate rural populations about bee-keeping and its virtues. We have already produced over 600 Litres of honey and are working to increase our apiaries. While the production and sale of honey generates income for the locals, bees also increase the yield of flowering trees and certain fruit trees. Bee-keeping is an old practice that has lately fallen out of use comparatively, but we aim to highlight its many advantages.
