BUILDING NARRATIVES OF SUSTAINABILITY
GREEN FINANCE PROJECT
BACKGROUND & RATIONALE
The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and Swechha worked together to analyze the current situation of social enterprises in India. As social enterprises do not have a special legal or registration status in India; this project identified 93 enterprises that support people to live more sustainably, contributing to sustainable lifestyles. The identified enterprises promote sustainable consumption through goods and services, operations, and investment impact and contribute to GHG emissions reduction from people’s daily consumption, thus promoting sustainable lifestyles in India. The research aimed to understand the current status of social enterprises contributing to sustainable lifestyles in India. Additionally, it worked to provide insights for knowledge sharing among the global community of social entrepreneurs and their supporters like local governments, financial institutions, and universities on promoting more enterprises to enable sustainable lifestyles.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Swechha and IGES in collaboration with the Government of Japan conducted a study titled "Green Finance". Survey on the Status and Contexts of Small Businesses/Community Enterprises for Sustainable Living “ with founders and co-founders of social enterprises and community businesses promoting sustainable lifestyles in India. The purpose of the study was to analyze and understand the current context, challenges and support systems that exist for community enterprises that are engaged in building sustainable lifestyles (such as reducing negative impacts from their daily consumption; enabling more reliable means of living; collaborating with neighbours in protecting the environment) across the sectors of food, goods, services, housing, leisure and mobility. As a part of the study, we analyzed the business models, the inspiration to start the business, growth factors, barriers and support needed for these enterprises, particularly in the areas of business development, grants and schemes, finance, IT and communication, capacity building and training. We were also able to draw patterns around certain sectors, as well as understand how factors such as gender, caste and religion determine the context for these social enterprises operating in India. The findings from the study will be used to recommend innovative strategies and design capacity-building training, policy guidance for entrepreneurs leading businesses and community enterprises for sustainable living, and the stakeholders involved in that ecosystem (e.g. local governments, financial institutions, think tanks) across India and Canada. As a part of the study, we also interviewed 6 Green Entrepreneurs across the fields of food and beverage, goods and products, fashion and mobility to understand their journeys of entrepreneurship and sustainability.

India's Law & Governance on Environment - Kanchi Kohli in conversation with Vimlendu Jha
Green The Map podcasts are a series on Sustainability and Environment, organised by Swechha India, in association with U.S. Department of State. Vimlendu Jha, one of the leading environmentalists of India and Founder Director of Swechha moderates these podcasts.
Kanchi Kohli works on environment, forest and biodiversity governance in India. Her work explores the links between law, industrialization and environment justice. Her research interests also include the implementation of biodiversity regulations in India. She is presently a Senior Researcher at Centre for Policy Research. Kanchi regularly teaches at universities and law schools in India on subjects related to biodiversity, environment and community development.
Burning Questions:
A broad landscape understanding of laws around environment and sustainability in India, a brief historical and philosophical perspective.
Whats interesting or exciting about Indian environmental laws?
How do you see India’s environment in last few decades, is it getting better or worse and why?
Where do laws stand in ensuring we have upgraded or degraded vs-a-vis environment in last several decades. Is it law, the execution on the ground, role of judiciary and executive, or all. Is there something missing in our basic understanding of law and governance for envy , in India.
Law and Governance, both, seem or sound very non-common, as in heavy for commoners to understand or indulge in. How do we simplify it.
You have done some phenomenal work in explaining law on the ground and engaging citizens around certain violations of the environmental laws, by the State as well as other stake holders. How has been your experience and if you have certain learnings to share.
Should our bureaucrats and politicians be forced to take mandatory courses on law and governance vis-a-vis environment, as most often we have seen them as biggest violators on the ground.
Whats the future of environmental laws in India, especially in the light of EIA draft 2020. -
