BACKGROUND & RATIONALE

Young women by virtue of their gender and lived realities face various forms of socio-economic discrimination, violence and exclusion. There is an urgent to facilitate their decision making and agency, and empower them with tangible tools of change, social and economic which can enable them to stand up on their own two feet, breaking the cycle of discrimination and inter generational challenges.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

As part of the United Nation’s Sustainable Lifestyle and Education Programme, Swechha in collaboration with the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan implemented a year long low carbon lifestyles project in India. The project aimed to collate country specific comprehensive lists of behaviour changes for a low carbon lifestyles options in terms of food, housing, mobility, manufacturing goods and leisure. The project conducted participatory research through citizen workshops and surveys in 6 cities spanning 5 domains. It also collected data to estimate the average carbon footprint of individuals. The project is now evaluating mitigation impacts if these lifestyle changes were adopted by the residents of India, giving policy recommendations and carrying out communication campaigns to encourage citizens to take actions.
