BRIDGE THE GAP - HEALTHY CITIES

BACKGROUND & RATIONALE

India’s cities are at a critical crossroads. Rising air pollution, degraded water systems, increasing waste, and lifestyle-related health challenges are reshaping the way we live—and impacting young people the most.

Bridge The Gap – Healthy Cities is Swechha’s flagship initiative that connects environment, health, and youth action, empowering students to understand their cities and transform them.

The program bridges the gap between awareness and action—equipping young people with the knowledge, exposure, and tools needed to become active changemakers in their communities.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Bridge The Gap – Healthy Cities is an experiential learning initiative that connects urban environmental challenges with public health, placing young people at the center of change. Implemented in partnership with the Bupa Foundation and Niva Bupa, the program works across 20 schools in Delhi NCR, engaging over 2,000 students annually through a structured journey of learning, exposure, and action. As cities grapple with rising air pollution, water stress, waste mismanagement, and declining biodiversity, the initiative builds a deeper understanding of how these challenges directly impact human health and everyday life.

The program combines interactive classroom workshops, immersive CityScape exposure trips, and hands-on Green Action Projects to create meaningful and sustained engagement. Through workshops, students explore key themes such as air, water, waste, food systems, and biodiversity, linking them to health outcomes. These learnings are brought to life through exposure visits to urban ecosystems and infrastructure, enabling students to experience the realities of their city first-hand. Each school further implements a Green Action Project—such as butterfly gardens, composting systems, food forests, or green zones—transforming campuses into living laboratories of sustainability.

In addition, the initiative extends beyond schools through the Bridge The Gap Green Fellowship, which supports young leaders across India with funding, mentorship, and implementation support to develop scalable solutions at the intersection of environment and health. By integrating education, infrastructure, and youth-led innovation, Bridge The Gap – Healthy Cities seeks to bridge the gap between awareness and action—nurturing a generation that is informed, responsible, and equipped to build healthier, more resilient cities.
