ENVIRONMENT | AIR QUALITY | RECLAIMING PARKS
KEY PROGRAM FEATURES
Delhi, the capital city is one of the most polluted cities in the world. Ironically, the city with this lethal air quality is home to more than 18,000 parks and gardens spread over 8000 hectares. Swechha in collaboration with The American Embassy has transformed one such park in B2 Rockview Apartments, Vasant Kunj, into an ‘Airshed’ hub.
This park now serves as the lungs of the neighbourhood by purifying the air around to counter the pollution. An airshed is an area within which the air frequently is confined or channeled. In an ‘Airshed’ typically all parts of the area are subject to similar conditions of air quality.
The temperature in the neighbourhood over the last couple of years, has come down by three-four degrees. Airshed is home to several green infrastructures. These include a butterfly garden, kitchen garden, shade garden, urban forest and nursery. The park also has compost pits where fallen leaves are converted into over 400-500 kgs of organic manure every month.
