GRAM ANUBHAV

SUSTAINABLE LIFETYLES AND EDUCATION

GRAM ANUBHAV

BACKGROUND & RATIONALE

Approximately 70% of India is comprised of villages. While there is an increasing shift towards

cities, the majority of India still lives in rural areas. Though many of these villages lack basic

requirements such as education and health care, these villages are culturally vibrant, ecologically

rich and full of local knowledge. There is so much here that still remains unexplored and untouched.

A lot can be learnt, changed and improved at the same time. Young people living in urban India are often unaware of the other India living in the villages of rural India. Living in a glittering world of shiny malls, sweeping flyovers and towering sky-scrapers, they are mostly oblivious to the potential and the problems that rural India has.

Gram Anubhav is a unique 4-day educational trip which takes high school students on a

journey of exploration, reflection and action into rural India.

RURAL EXPOSURE

TEAM-BUILDING WORKSHOPS

EXPERIENTIAL ENGAGEMENT

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

A rural exposure of 4-5 days, this journey is purely experiential in nature and provides a space for young minds to understand the realities of rural India and build perspectives on the self and world, so that as future policy makers of the country they become active and responsible citizens

today. We work with urban schools and colleges to give the students an experiential learning environment through workshops, village interactions and mapping, home visits, engagement with grassroots practitioners, Shramdaan and cultural events.

Since 2004 we have conducted over 50 Gram Anubhavs with over 5000 students in schools and colleges , to remote villages of Rajasthan, Himachal and Uttarakhand, with some of the prominent schools of Delhi such as The Shriram Schools, Modern School Barakhamba Road and Vasant Vihar, German School, Green Fields School, Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jadavpur University (Kolkata), St. Xavier’s College (Kolkata), and Jamia Milia Islamia.

Several remote rural communities have been visited as part of Gram Anubhavs. These include the Bhil tribe of Karech village in Rajasthan, Kraska village in the core area of the Sariska Tiger Reserve and the Bhutia community of Lata village in Uttarakhand. We have partnered with over 100 committed and established grassroots NGOs and social movements in rural communities Bodh Shiksha Samiti, Foundation for Ecological Security(FES), Society for Integrated Development of Himalayas(SIDH), HESCO.

SOME OF OUR

TESTIMONIALS

"The village visit was the most memorable part of the journey. I got to know so much about the community! And realised living in the city we have so many stereotypes and incorrect beliefs. I enjoyed the community cooking session, when we all made puris!"

Kunal

Modern School

"I will always remember the Shramdaan and never again take for granted the grains and vegetables I see on my dinner table. This experience was life-changing."

Mallika

Modern School

"We understood how the local community engages in farming, and how protecting the forest, the land - is not an option for them, it's their whole life. We take green spaces in the city for granted ! I want to continue learning about farmers and farmer's rights when i go back to the city."
